GAME OVER - DAY 154

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman: If you want to know how I feel, I'll sum it up in one word - Terrible.

I was planning on doing some schoolwork tonight, but so far I've been glued to the television screen with all this NHL talk happening. As I expected, the NHL season was formally cancelled by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman today. Although in a sense I'm relieved a decision was made, I'm disappointed both sides are calling off all points of the negotiating process and going back to square one.

I'm concerned about the future of the NHL because both sides seem to be way off. The future doesn't look very good, particularly in the states where fans care more about baseball, basketball and football. Wayne Gretzky said he's worried the result of this cancellation means both sides won't be renegotiating until the summer. I sure hope he's wrong. And he said if there were a shortened 2004/05 season there was a strong possibility he'd be coaching in Phoenix. Now he may never coach. And what about the players reaching an age to retire? Am I ever going to see Al MacInnis, Steve Yzerman, Mark Messier and Steve Thomas play again?

An online poll on tsn.ca detemining what the fans think indicate that most fans side with the owners. In fact, the results prove that 75% are against the players.

There's so much uncertainty in the NHL now it's driving me crazy.
